The McCord Drainage Ditch Project will decrease erosion and improve maintenance access, safety, and stormwater conveyance capacity along the McCord Pond drainage ditch, starting at Betton Road and ending 300 feet north of Post Road (behind Ashford Club Apartments). Erosion along this segment of the ditch has caused steep side slopes and deep drop-offs, and the wooden retaining wall located north of Post Road, which has reached the end of its useful life, restricts proper access for maintenance.
Public meetings were held in 2018 and 2019 to discuss various project alternatives to improve or replace the existing ditch. Citizens in attendance strongly supported Alternative 3 - a box culvert. With this option, the existing open drainage ditch will be replaced with a large underground box culvert that will convey stormwater below ground (similar to Franklin Boulevard). Design of the box culvert is currently in the final stages.

When will construction start, and how long will it last?
The project is currently moving into the construction phase. At this time, construction is anticipated to begin in August 2022. Once underway, construction is estimated to take 12 months.
Will the project impact existing trees along the ditch?
The City will work with an arborist to develop mitigation strategies to preserve as many trees as possible. Because not all impacts can be avoided, some trees will most likely be removed. Digging around the root system of a tree may harm its health and can increase the likelihood of it uprooting and falling during high winds. See sheet 23 of the plans for more information.
Will the existing access road that serves area businesses be improved?
Yes, the access road will be reconstructed and repaved as part of this project.
Will construction be disruptive to the neighborhood and area businesses?
While construction of this type can be disruptive, the City will do everything possible to minimize inconveniences to residents and businesses. The construction activities associated with these improvements will involve the use of heavy equipment and other aspects of land development that present a degree of disturbance and inconvenience. It is the City’s priority to be upfront and informative; keep a safe, clean project site; and be a good neighbor. City inspectors will maintain an open line of communication with the contractor and will continuously work with them to ensure the process is as minimally disturbing as possible. Construction hours will normally begin after sunrise and end prior to sunset, with no construction allowed on Sundays. Roadway detours, if needed, will be clearly marked, so vehicular access to businesses is maintained. Who will oversee construction?
The project will be constructed by a private contractor; however, the City will oversee all construction activities and will have a full-time inspector available to address any issues that arise during construction.
