The City of Tallahassee and the Independent Ethics Board are currently accepting applications to fill vacancies in Seat 1 and Seat 6. The current membership of the Independent Ethics Board is available at Talgov.com/ethics.
The vacancy in Seat 1 will be filled by a City Commission appointment. As an at-large position, Seat 6 will be filled by an individual selected by the Independent Ethics Board members in Seats 1 through 5.
It is currently expected that the City Commission will make an appointment at its January 30 meeting and that the Independent Ethics Board will make an appointment at its February 16 meeting. The deadline for City Commission consideration is 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25, 2019, and the deadline for Independent Ethics Board consideration is 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2019. A single application form and application process are being used; therefore, any applications considered by the City Commission will also be eligible for consideration by the Independent Ethics Board.
The selected candidate for Seat 1 will serve the remainder of the vacated seat's term, which expires on Dec. 31, 2020. As this will be a partial term, the selected candidate will be eligible to serve two additional three-year terms. The selected candidate for Seat 6 will serve a three-year term, which expires on December 31, 2021, and will be eligible to serve an additional three-year term.
To be qualified, applicants must be registered electors of the City of Tallahassee. Officers and employees of the City of Tallahassee are ineligible to serve on this board. The role of the Ethics Board, per the City Charter, is to develop an ethics code, manage the City's ethics and fraud hotline and be responsible for training all employees and officials in accordance with state and local ethics requirements. The Ethics Board is also able to propose ordinances and Charter amendments to the City Commission, investigate ethics complaints and employ an Ethics Officer.
